Mammoth Lakes has a lot to offer for nature lovers
Do you like this story?
Though easy to overlook on a map (it's only four square miles), Mammoth Lakes, California could hardly be described as un-noteworthy. Tucked away into the Inyo National Forest, the town highlights all that is stunning about Eastern California - attitude included. There's not much to stress about in this laid-back neck of the woods, so prepare to discover a new way to see the world as you head here for your next vacation.
Ample snowfall during the winter and pleasantly mild temperatures during the summer make a visit to Mammoth Lakes a good idea any time of the year. Starting with the snow season, the mountain receives around 400 inches of powder a year over 3,500 acres of accessible ski terrain. Several different instructional facilities are on hand for kids, adult newcomers and seniors looking to develop their skills. Old hands will be challenged by the tougher slopes; 15% are designated expert and 20% are advanced.
Lodges, restaurants, bars, child care and sport shops cement Mammoth Lakes' reputation as a worthwhile place to ski and cavort with friends and family. Factor in that 70% of the days are filled with sunshine, and the picture of a lovely vacation is just about complete. It's up to you and your companions to fill in the details, but it'll doubtlessly be easy to do.
The warm weather months compete for visitors' attentions, especially because it's still possible to ski through June and even into July. Spend some time at high altitude and then head down to where it's warm and green for some canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, golf, tennis or any of the other exhilarating and cathartic activities waiting to be embraced.
Mammoth Lakes is adjacent to John Muir and Ansel Adams wilderness areas and several miles from an entrance to Yosemite National Park. In other words, this region is ridiculously beautiful and makes real the sort of atmosphere you'd expect to pick up on in an award-winning photograph or stunning documentary about the Sierra Nevadas. Strap on a backpack, don't forget the camera and watch out for bears as you and your fellow adventurers traverse the hills, valleys, and waterfall-lined trails. Air doesn't get much fresher than this.
You wouldn't necessarily think it, but Mammoth Lakes is actually a fine place to go shopping. Art galleries, craft boutiques, retail outlets and more will greet interested buyers. Picking up some sweets or souvenirs won't be a problem, and it'll provide the opportunity to see the village, too. Dining options abound in this tiny town, so at this point it seems that all needs will be pretty much taken care of. Sample some fresh seafood, modern California cuisine, tasty top-notch desserts and many entertaining nightlife scenes.
The only way this trip could be made better is by ensuring that the place you lay your head each night is as extraordinary as the surroundings. Everyone knows that forests and hot tubs go together quite nicely, and nothing is better than a patio overlooking a sweeping vista - without a car or skyscraper in sight. Comfortable beds, well-equipped kitchens, entertainment centers and gondola access don't hurt either, and all of these things are part of the picture should you decide to rent a vacation condo, cottage or cabin while in Mammoth Lakes.
There's something about stealing away to your own little home in the mountains that pushes a getaway to the next level; if you've yet to Experience, and then make your first trip Mammoth Lakes Apartments in the Land of luxury and affordable accommodation from outside particular.
