Dictator uses people's money for his Presidential campaign

5 November 2007

It was announced on Sunday that in 2008 the government would increase the wages of the state employees. Further measures include the government funding the books and stationary needed by all students from Grades 1 to 12. Additionally the fee for participating in the O' level and A' Level exams are to be paid by the government for those who can't afford it.

It is the duty of a government to provide for the education of its youngest citizens. It is a government's obligation to pay its employees a decent wage. In effect, what he is doing is something long overdue. The question is why hasn't he done it before? He has been there for almost 30 years now! Even a child would know the answer. All this is rhetoric and false promises. The target is to get public support for the 2008 Presidential election.

Actually it is not unusual for dictators to use state funds to promote their own Presidential campaigns. They often hope that in the short-term, the people may forget his brutal methods and would be duped into believing that he is indeed a benevolent leader. However, the Maldivian people are no more willing to be treated so contemptuously.

What the Dictator is spending on the people is people's money. We do not have to thank the Dictator for spending our money on us. At the same time, we must be cautious as well. The man has promised us quite a lot before but has continuously failed to keep them.

Are you prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt? Remember, he has had 29 years to prove himself!
