Two suspects still wanted in investigation are in Maldives – Police

| DATE: 2007-10-07 |

Two suspects that the Police are searching for in connection to the home-made bomb that was detonated at Sultan Park on 29 September are still in Maldives, the Maldives Police Service has said. They said that they were in possession of information that pointed to the fact.

Speaking at a news conference held at the Police HQ, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz said that locating Abdulla Latheef Ibrahim, 24, and Ali Shameem, 25, were of the utmost importance to the investigation but that so far the search had proven fruitless. He also said details about one of the suspects, Mohamed Sobah, 19, who had confessed to his part in the explosion, could only be made public after the Police had interrogated the two suspects that they were looking for.

Riyaz said that five suspects that had been released so far were not directly involved in the plot. He said that they had originally been arrested because they had connections to the mobile phone and SIM Card that had been used in the detonation of the bomb. However, once they found that they were not directly linked to the mobile phone or SIM card they had been released. Four of those that the Police had released were four Bangladeshis and one local man.

“They had at some time either used the mobile phone or had been registered as the owner of the SIM Card that had been used in the detonation of the bomb,” Riyaz said. “Although the SIM Card had been registered under their names they were not the ones who had been using it recently.”

Riyaz also said that the search of the house M. Zeeniyaamaa in Male’ last Wednesday night had turned up evidence that it was linked to the bombing. The house is used by a breakaway religious group who use the house to conduct illegal Friday prayers. He also said that they had recovered many items from the house that they needed to further investigate. The house had been closed up since the search.

So far only three of those arrested had confessed to plotting the explosion at Sultan Park. They are Ahmed Naseer, 20, Moosa Inas, 21 and Mohamed Sobah, 19. Naseer and Inas had been the two who had actively participated in detonating the Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
