Police Reveal CCTV Footage Of Bomb Plotters

Police have revealed CCTV footage of two men they say have confessed responsibility for the home-made bomb which exploded in Malé on Satuday.

Twenty one year old Moosa Inas and twenty year old Ahmed Naseer are shown entering the park together, in footage police say was shot ten minutes before the explosion. The two men leave the park seven minutes later, walking separate ways.

After three minutes Moosa Inas returns on a motorcycle. One minute later, the bomb explodes, and Inas immediately speeds away on his bike.

The CCTV footage was presented to journalists in a specially arranged press conference, broadcast live on state television and on radio. The CCTV footage did not display times.

Two Men Wanted

Police have released mugshots of Inas, Naseer and three other men they say were involved in the plot.

Mohamed Sobah, nineteen, from the island of Villingili adjacent to the capital Male' is in custody and has apparently confessed too. But police are looking for Abdul Latheef Ibrahim of Laamu atoll Kalhaidhoo, and Ali Shameem of Shaviyani atoll Komando, and appealed to the public for information.

Inas, who is from the same island in Laamu as Abdul Latheef Ibrahim and Naseer of Gaaf Alif Kanduhuludhoo were both arrested in an unnamed foreign country, police assistant commissioner Abudllah Riyaz said.

Two of the five suspects have previously been arrested or burglary.

Fourteen men are now in custody overall, including four foreign nationals. Three have been arrested in the last twenty four hours.

Police said no suspects have been released despite claims by family members to the contrary. And everyone arrested has some link to the explosion, Riyaz emphasised.

No Motive

At a press conference Monday Riyaz had told journalists, "The reasons for the attack are now clear.” But today he refused to speculate on possible motive.

“It is too early to say whether it is linked to Islamic extremism,” he said. “We do not know if foreign groups are involved.”

Both Inas and Naseer were arrested abroad. And police or government officials have said previously at least three suspects were arrested trying to leave the country.

Of the five men named by the police, only Inas and Naseer have an obviously Wahhabi appearance in their police mugshots, with long beards.

In the CCTV shots, Inas also sported a baggy black t-shirt with a CIA (America’s Central Intelligence Agency) imprint.

Inas’ motorcycle was impounded by police last night after they seized it from outside the Zikura
mosque on Majedee Magu, which is linked to a radical prayer group police visited on Monday.

The two wanted men, Abdul Latheef Ibrahim and Ali Shameen, are both clean shaven in their police mugshots.

Evidence

Police have a number of pieces of forensic evidence, including the mobile phone they believe was used to make the detonation phone call.

Acting on information from one of the suspects, forensic divers recovered the phone and SIM card from the harbour area of the international airport, which is on an island adjacent to the capital Malé

The police would not say whether the phone was thrown into the sea as the suspects fled the country from the airport.

Assistant Commissioner Riyaz said an FBI team who have been assisting with the investigation had been very helpful, but did not reveal details of their involvement.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Riyaz said, and appealed to journalists not to name places searched to prevent, “compromising the investigation.”
