Maldives blast couple back in UK

Written by BBC News, on 05-10-2007 23:30

A British couple who were injured in a bomb blast while on honeymoon in the Maldives last month have returned home.

Christian Donelan, 32, of Rotherham, and his wife Jennifer, who is also 32 and originally from Wrightington in Wigan, were hurt by the bomb in Male.

They were airlifted to Britain and are now undergoing further medical treatment at a hospital in Manchester.

It is understood that the couple, who live in Qatar in the Gulf, need urgent plastic surgery and skin grafts.

They were among 12 tourists hurt by the bomb on Saturday, said to have contained nails and glass.

'Good recovery'

The device detonated outside the crowded Sultan Park in Male as they were visiting on a day trip.

It was the first time a bomb has exploded in the Maldives.

It is not yet clear who was behind the attack, or what the intended target was.

Tom Green, Jennifer's father, said he was shocked when he heard the news.

"I got the telephone call from Jennifer and Christian's friends. They said there's been an explosion, and Jennifer and Christian have been involved with it.

"We thought the worse, but fortunately it wasn't the worst.

Their families have been told they should both make a good recovery.
