MALE, October 6, 2007 (Haveeru News Service) -- Five of the 16 people who had been arrested in connection to the September 29 bombing at Sultan Park have been released, the Maldives Police Service said on Friday.

In addition, the scene of the bombing, the roundabout in front of the Sultan Park which had been cordoned off by the Police in their search for forensic evidence, was also opened Friday.

According to the Police website the five who were released included the four foreigners who had been arrested earlier and one local man. They were released because the investigation had revealed that they had not been connected to the detonation of the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the Sultan Park.

Currently there are 11 more remaining in Police custody and the Police website states that there are no foreigners among those being detained.

Police had earlier revealed the identities of three perpetrators who, police claimed, had confessed so far. They are Moosa Inas, 21, of Laamu atoll Kalaidhoo, Ahmed Naseer, 20, of Gaafu Alifu atoll Kanduhulhudhoo, and Mohamed Sobah, 19 of Vaavu atoll Landhoo.

Also Police have revealed details of two more individuals that they are still searching for in connection with the explosion. They are Abdul Latheef Ibrahim, 24, (Saadhunaa Manzil in Gaafu Alifu atoll Kanduhulhudhoo) and Ali Shameem, 25, (Dhoores in Shaviyani atoll Komandoo).

The IED consisted of two gas canisters (the kind used to fill lighters), concrete nails for shrapnel, and a washing machine timer and a mobile phone as remote control to detonate it, Police have said. The home-made bomb had been detonated inside Sultan Park at 2:36 Saturday, 29th September at a time that tourists would be visiting the Park.

12 tourists were injured in the accident and the British couple that were among the most seriously injured had been airlifted back home with the help of a Swiss Air Ambulance at a cost of $100,000 on the 3rd of October.

The couple, Christian and Jennifer Donelan, works for a Qatar company that organizes sports events in the Gulf region. Jennifer had first and second degree burns covering up to 40 percent of her body, including her face, hands and legs. Christian, 32, had 27 percent burns.
